Description

It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco, the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because some 20 years earlier the United States lost a war—and is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan.

This harrowing, Hugo Award-winning novel is the work that established Philip K. Dick as an innovator in science fiction while breaking the barrier between science fiction and the serious novel of ideas. In it Dick offers a haunting vision of history as a nightmare from which it may just be possible to wake.

Reviews

  • Not the Amazon Prime story. But you should read it.

If you buy the book expecting the story portrayed in the series on Amazon Prime you will be disappointed. This book though, is quite good. Surprisingly short, it is packed with a good storyline, that is both fictional and a philosophy book in one.

No one writes like Dick. His prose is economical, and yet always vivid. His stories are so clever and thought-provoking. At the simplest, "The Man in the High Castle" is about an alternate reality, but more deeply it is about all reality and our constant struggle to perceive and understand it.

I was so excited to read this book. The premise is fascinating, but the execution is lacking. We get glimpses into an axis-led world, but much is suggested in passing and not well developed. The plot lines he chose to follow are odd and not well fleshed out in many cases. The dialog is stilted. Based on the reviews and hype over the TV series, I expected so much more.
  • Half a novel

This book has a really interesting premise. This book has really interesting characters. This book has really interesting plot development. Then it stops in the middle and never finishes. Feels like half a novel. Plot is truncated. Characters are truncated. It feels like walking on a partially completed bridge and then falling into the Grand Canyon.
  • A Hard Read

The Man in The High Castle was a very difficult book to read. There was no real depth to the characters and not enough detail in the back-story. None of the situations ever really get resolved. If you were thinking about reading it to gain some insight into the current TV show of the same title, you will have wasted your time.
  • A Great Alternative History Novel

This is one of Dick's finest works. He explores how things may have come about if certain events hadn't occurred in the past. He basically invents a modern day genre with this novel. Not for the faint of heart, or for blind patriots.
  • So much more than the TV series

Beautifully wrought characters with enough detail of the alternative universe to fully satisfy "what-if" curiosities. But In the end it is about our world as well.

Strange, intelligent, difficult at times but also well written I might read it again.
  • Interesting premise, odd book.

I love the ideas put forth, but hated that the story went no further. After investigating the author's thoughts on a second book/series, I do understand the difficulty of delving into such a demented mind as the Nazi leader. Overall, I my interest was piqued, but I was left at a loss.
