#1 New York Times Bestseller
"Flips the classic born-in-a-shack rise to political office tale on its head. I skipped meals to read this book - also unusual - because every page was funny. It made me deliriously happy." - Louise Erdrich, The New York Times
From Senator Al Franken - #1 bestselling author and beloved SNL alum - comes the story of an award-winning comedian who decided to run for office and then discovered why award-winning comedians tend not to do that.

This is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect.
It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.
It's a book about our deeply polarized, frequently depressing, occasionally inspiring political culture, written from inside the belly of the beast.
In this candid personal memoir, the honorable gentleman from Minnesota takes his army of loyal fans along with him from Saturday Night Live to the campaign trail, inside the halls of Congress, and behind the scenes of some of the most dramatic and/or hilarious moments of his new career in politics.
Has Al Franken become a true Giant of the Senate? Franken asks readers to decide for themselves.

Al Franken's like ability is only outshone by his integrity.
  • Glad he found the time

It's awesome that a man of the people was able to put some time aside from helping constituents so he could write a book about helping his constituents, or whatever. Hope he finds more time for similar to keep from making more mistakes as senator. Good luck!

Engaging throughout. I love how Senator Franken connects the work of the Senate to how it affects people's lives. His "theory and practice" comments on how Congress - especially the Senate - are highly informative. I love his passion for getting it right ("Neo-sticklerism" sign me up.) His affection for his staff, family, constitutients and (most of) his colleagues shines through. Oh, and the book is hilarious - do not miss the footnotes I'm going to buy the rest of his books.

You're a scholar and a gentleman, Senator Franken. Well, you're a scholar, and you're funny. Aww... Who am I kidding? You're a scholar, a gentleman, funny AND HOT! Seriously, thank you. Fine job. "Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you...." Maggie

This may not be Sen. Franken's best book, it is still funny, surprising, blunt and as in your face as expected from Mr. Franken. The book is a great view into the politics of D.C. Shaped by Mr. Franknen's sarcastic and sardonic views. This book does not mire in the hopelessness of Republican politics. I do not want to give away anything. This is a book to enjoy with surprise.

Excellent book. Serious topics covered with detail, humanity, and humor. Fair treatment of complex issues. Even where I disagree with Franken, it's hard not respect and like him. Minnesotans are lucky to have him. Great read. For the record, I'm more of a centrist than a "progressive". I read this book, including every footnote. As books from sitting politicians go, this one is spectacular.
